Interviews from the vault: Bastille (3 min reading time)

So hunting through the catacombs, I came across some classic interviews dating back from the early days of freshborngold. In the early days we used a “barebones” question style and to be honest…
It sucked.

You live and you learn, right?
Let’s take a look back at our old interviews with some of our more notable guests.

[DATED: 9TH MARCH, 2012]

1. How did you start making music?

Dan: I started writing and recording in my bedroom. I worked away at songs originally on an 8 track recorder then on my laptop.

2. What other artists inspired you to make music?

Dan: I love artists who constantly experiment and try new things within what they do. People like Bjork and Antony & The Johnsons. I also think Kanye West is brilliant at trying different sounds and sampling a really broad range of music but still making it work.

3. What’s some of the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Dan: I’m not sure, maybe to always try to write better songs?

4. What music do you, yourself, listen to?

Dan: At the moment I’m listening to Bon Iver’s second album quite a lot, and The Weeknd’s first mixtape, “House of Balloons”.

5. Do you remember the first concert you ever went to? How was it?

Dan: I can’t remember you know… I think it was my cousin’s rock band when I was a kid. I remember thinking they were the coolest people in the world but also being a bit terrified.

6. What runs through your mind when making music?

Dan: Nothing really, it occupies all my thoughts. Unless I’m on stage, in which case I’m probably thinking about not falling over.

7. What do you class your own music under?

Dan: I’m not sure. Alternative, melancholic pop maybe? I like to try out different things on different songs, so sometimes it sounds like a band and sometimes it sounds very electronic.

8. What do you think of the whole scene at the moment?

Dan: It feels like people can do whatever they want at the moment which is great.

9. What can we expect from you in the future?

Dan: We just put out a free mixtape/album, and we’ve also got a single called “Overjoyed” coming out in April. I’m working on an album at the moment which should be out later this year.

10. Any comments you want to make to the people at Fresh Born Gold?

Dan: I should probably mention the mixtape/album that we just put out. It’s a mix of covers that we’ve produced, samples from films and bits of our own songs, and it’s free to download from

and how about in 2018?
